Reviewing our Actions and Planning our Next Steps

What targeted actions did we take to address our school’s learning focus?

Teachers engaged in professional development on literacy centres (Mentoring with Brianna Adams April 9), literacy strategies and book clubs (Leyton Schnellert April 29 & 30), and staff participation in SD38 Spring Literacy Series.  Teachers are applying strategies learned through these professional development literacy series into their classrooms to enhance literacy instruction.

What gap or problem were these actions intended to address? Why was this particular strategy/action chosen? We noticed from our Fall RFRA Assessments that 26% of our students were Emerging and 41% were Developing in making connections to text.  Since this time, we have focused on learning more targeted reading strategies and purchased a wider variety of reading materials that are not only engaging for students but provide more opportunities for connections to themselves, their place and with each other.
What does the evidence tell us so far?Spring RFRA assessments indicate strong progress in students’ ability to make connections to text, with 13% of students now assessed as Emerging (down from 26% in the fall) and 34% as Developing (down from 41%).
To what extent are the actions making a difference?

Interviewing students shows that they are feeling more confident as readers with choice of books, staff support and encouragement, as well as helping with choosing the right kind of books for their level.

‘I think I’ve improved in my critical thinking while reading because we’ve been doing a lot of Literacy Circle activities and novel studies.  A lot of the books are about thinking deeply about the authors message, character traits and plots.’ (Gr 6 student)

How will we move forward accordingly?

Results from the Spring RFRA and student responses were shared and discussed in our June staff meeting.

Next steps include:

  • Providing targeted literacy interventions for students who are emerging in Reading.
  • Creating home reading programs that are accessible for families.
  • Plan school-wide activities that encourage joyful reading.
  • Professional Development for staff that focuses on supporting English Language Learners.
