A Grade 6/7 classroom teacher and our teacher librarian collaborated on a literacy unit based on "The Barren Grounds", an Indigenous story by Canadian author, David A. Robertson. "Sketch-noting" was introduced to the students as a way for them to demonstrate their understanding during the read aloud. With practice students can identify and use an appropriate strategy for developing their reading comprehension of fiction and non-fiction texts.
