In May of 2018, the staff decided to change the awards given at the end of the year to more accurately reflect what the staff and students have been working on throughout the year. After much thought and discussion, the two award categories became:

1. STARR Award - awarded to students who demonstrated excellence in STARR (safe, thoughtful, accepting, respectful, responsible) Behaviour

2. Growth Mindset Award - awarded to students who have shown excellence in growth mindset by demonstrating outstanding effort, hard work and perseverance during the year

At our September staff meeting, the staff recognized the need to be more explicit in their teaching of Growth Mindset (as this is a fairly new concept compared to acting as a Brighouse STARR) and decided that it would be helpful to explain the awards at the beginning of the year for students. We are hoping that as the year progresses, the idea of demonstrating effort, hard work and perseverance will become integrated into the language and thinking of all students at Brighouse.
