Core Competency Posters for our Classrooms

Led by one of our enthusiastic and creative primary teachers, a few members of the staff created a set of Core Competency posters displaying "I" statements for each area. Using the Ministry documents as a guide, the teachers tweaked the language of the "I" statements to ensure that they included vocabulary students would understand and could use with each other. Fantastic discussions took place as teachers debated over the vocabulary and wording of the "I" statements, as well as talked about student understanding of the statements. All of that work resulted in 6 newly created posters that were ordered and printed in May, 2018 for classrooms, and these are now on display throughout the school. Teachers are able to refer to the posters as they discuss the core competencies of Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social Skills with students throughout the year. By having the language of the Core Competencies more visible in the classroom, it is hoped that students will find it easier to incorporate the language into their everyday conversations about their learning and growth.
