WHERE EVERYONE COUNTS

Mathematics in the Richmond School District

Mathematics in the Richmond School District

November 2018

Mathematics learning focuses on both content/topics such as multiplication, fractions and geometry as well as competencies/processes such as estimating, visualizing, developing mental math strategies and explaining and justifying mathematical ideas or decisions. One way to support your child’s success in mathematics at school is to support the understanding that math is more than just “answer getting” and ask them to explain their thinking. For example, if your child is practicing computation and calculates that 58+35 is 93, ask them to explain how they know the answer is 93. This is an introduction to the mathematical idea of “proof”.

Teachers in BC are required to teach, assess and communicate student learning based on the grade level learning standards in the mathematics curriculum. The redesigned K-9 curriculum has been in place since September 2016. The curriculum is available to view here where you can select the grade level/s you are interested in: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/curriculum/mathematics

For more information about BC’s mathematics curriculum, talk to your child’s teacher, school administration or contact Janice Novakowski, K-12 District Teacher Consultant for Mathematics & Numeracy at jnovakowski@sd38.bc.ca.
